Dee Gordon of the Seattle Mariners honored as the 55th annual Hutch Award® winner

SEATTLE — April 23, 2020 — Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is honoring Seattle Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon as the 55th annual Hutch Award® winner. The award goes to a Major League Baseball player who best represents the courage and dedication of the late Fred Hutchinson.

The Mariners nominated Gordon for his exemplary commitment to helping his community through various philanthropic efforts including establishing the Flash of Hope program to help children who have been victims of or have lost a parent due to domestic violence. Gordon is deeply committed to this issue, as he lost his own mother to domestic violence. He also volunteers his time to help with poverty, hunger and the needs of cancer patients.

“This award has an incredible history, and I’m grateful to be a part of its legacy,” said Gordon. “I believe it’s our duty as professional athletes to give back to the communities that support us. Recognition isn’t why I do it, but it is an honor when an organization like Fred Hutch recognizes the efforts.”

The Hutch Award is one of the longest-running, most prestigious awards in baseball. Past honorees include 14 Hall of Fame players. The award was created in 1965 in honor of Fred “Hutch” Hutchinson, a standout Major League Baseball player and manager who died of cancer and inspired the creation of the Seattle-based cancer research center.

“Fred Hutch and the entire Seattle community is lucky to have a wonderful person and player like Dee Gordon,” said Dr. Thomas J. Lynch, president and director of Fred Hutch and holder of the Raisbeck Endowed Chair. “He’s overcome tremendous adversity to have a positive impact in the world, and that certainly represents the same type of spirit Fred Hutchinson was famous for.”

Traditionally, the Hutch Award winner is formally honored at the annual Hutch Award Luncheon fundraiser at T-Mobile Park. While the in-person event has been cancelled due to the coronavirus, supporters can still step up to the plate and donate to Fred Hutch. This year, donations will support Fred Hutch’s #GivingTuesdayNow campaign. Gifts will fuel research to end the COVID-19 pandemic, from tracking the virus to developing tests, treatments and vaccines. Interested donors can visit Donate to Fred Hutch. Fred Hutch will honor Gordon this spring with a virtual event that will include Gordon and other special guests from around baseball. Additional details will be available at the Hutch Award website.
