Dartmouth engineering professor elected OSA fellow

Dartmouth engineering professor

Jifeng Liu

has been named a fellow of

The Optical Society

(OSA). Fellow membership in OSA is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics, and selection is based on several factors including distinguished contributions to education, research, engineering, business, and the community.

Liu’s research focuses on renewable energy and reducing the energy consumption of information technology through integrated photonics. He aims to advance solar technologies that are less expensive and more efficient to be widely deployed and offset the consumption of fossil fuels.

“I feel greatly honored to join a group of leading engineers and scientists in the field of optics and photonics. I look forward to making more significant contributions to this field in collaborations with my colleagues at Dartmouth, from solar energy to infrared image sensing,” said Liu.

Liu is being honored specifically “for contributions to germanium-based active photonic devices monolithically integrated on silicon.”

In 2012, Liu received an

award from the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program

at the National Science Foundation (NSF), and in 2004, received the Materials Research Society (MRS) Graduate Student Gold Award. In addition, Dartmouth honored Liu with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014. Teams led or co-led by Liu have also been honored with solar awards from the US Department of Energy in 2015, 2018, and 2020, including a

SunShot Initiative award

.

Liu holds more than ten patents, has been cited over 10,000 times, and has served as a reviewer for more than 20 scientific journals. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of The Electrochemical Society (ECS), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and MRS.
