Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing Named National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education

Bethesda, Md. – For the second consecutive year, the Uniformed Services University’s Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) was recently named a National League for Nursing (NLN) Center of Excellence in Nursing Education. This year, the prestigious honor was bestowed upon the advanced nursing program for its superior standards in promoting faculty expertise This is a five year designation for this category (2021-2025).

The NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation is presented to  nursing programs and health care organizations across the country and across the spectrum of higher education in nursing, in various categories, and recognizes those that have demonstrated visionary leadership and high standards in enhancing student learning. This year, the GSN was recognized as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education in the category “Promote the pedagogical expertise of faculty” – and was one of only 18 nursing programs recognized in this category.

To define excellence in this category, the school had to demonstrate that faculty promote excellence in teaching, student advisement, and curriculum development, as evidenced by their shared vision. The GSN also had to demonstrate that its faculty interactions with students and colleagues promote innovation, and that evaluation of its faculty development program is effective in achieving educational development and resources. Among many other criteria, the GSN had to show its faculty are actively engaged in their communities, resulting in enhanced student learning and professional development.

In 2020, the GSN was also recognized as a NLN Center of Excellence in the category “Enhance student learning and professional development” (2020-2024).  The designation as an NLN Center of Excellence distinguishes the GSN’s commitment to demonstrating sustained, evidence-based, and substantive innovation, as well as commitment to continuous quality improvement. Through public recognition and distinction, the program also acknowledges the outstanding innovations and sustainability of excellence that the GSN conveys.

There are less than 70 schools of nursing nationwide that have achieved NLN Center of Excellence designation in any category – a tribute to GSN Dean Carol Romano’s leadership, the GSN faculty, students and staff whose excellence is reflected in this national recognition.

“We are excited about this award that recognizes our commitment to leadership, service and excellence in educating advanced practice nurses, scholars and scientist who are dedicated to learning to care for our Nation’s warriors and their families,” Romano said.

The GSN will be officially presented with this prestigious designation at the 2021 NLN Education Summit virtual Honors Convocation in September.
