Coronavirus crisis: governments, organizations need to get creative to avoid healthcare rationing

Governmental and nongovernmental organizations need to get creative to avoid healthare rationing during the coronavirus crisis, says Nicole Hassoun, professor of philosophy at Binghamton University, State University of New York and head of the Global Health Impact project.

“While transparency is important if we have to ration ventilators or other health services in this pandemic, now is the time for governmental and nongovernmental organizations – like the Gates Foundation – to come up with creative new ways to meet projected needs,” says Hassoun. “Can we repurpose other equipment to meet this need or move respirators to where people will need them if we cannot manufacture and purchase them? Thinking like a global community may help ensure the available resources have the greatest global health impact and help us come up with good ways to avoid rationing so healthcare workers do not have to let some die to save others.”
