A Perspective suggests that to address the magnitude of the global threat posed by climate change, climate scientists should apply the urgency of the Space Race to enact a step-change in the ability of climate models to approximate natural systems, harnessing new technological capacity to expand understanding of regional climate systems; such an effort is likely to be most effective if scaled up through international initiatives where human and computational resources are pooled, according to the authors.
