Caroline Shiboski wins IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Caroline Shiboski, University of California, San Francisco, USA, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine & Pathology Research. Shiboski was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Shiboski is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orofacial Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. She received her D.D.S. from the Universite R. Descartes, Paris, France, her M.P.H. from the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, USA. She also earned certificates in dental public health, clinical epidemiology and oral medicine.

Shiboski’s research has focuses on the oral complications of several types of immune dysfunction including immune suppression and autoimmunity. For 15 years she has been the lead epidemiologist of the Sjögren’s Syndrome International Collaboration Clinical Alliance biorepository and registry, which has collected data and biospecimens from more than 3,500 individuals in seven countries and four continents. This international collaboration has led to the development of a final set of criteria used to select patients for entry into Sjögren’s Syndrome clinical trials.

Shiboski has also been a leader in implementing clinical studies pertaining to oral disease among persons living with HIV/AIDS and the complications of antiretroviral therapy. These advances led to a collaboration supported by the AIDS Fogarty Program exploring oral candidiasis as a surrogate marker for HIV disease among women in Zimbabwe. Her research accomplishments have produced an outstanding record of peer-reviewed publications and have been supported by multiple grants from numerous agencies.

One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone and the oral soft tissue. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
