Are wind farms being delayed to protect fossil fuel industry?

Construction of the country’s largest offshore wind farm–the Vineyard Wind Project off the coast of Massachusetts–was supposed to begin this year. But the project faces a significant delay with the news that the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is imposing a broad, expanded environmental impact review. The surprise regulatory hurdle comes at a time when fossil fuel projects seem to be getting fast-tracked by the federal government. Jeremy Firestone, director of the Center for Research in Wind at the University of Delaware, can speak to the possible double standard at play here and what it means for the Vineyard Wind project, the first of several such initiatives that have been advanced by East Coast states to ramp up their alternative energy pipelines.
