American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Partners with Patient Safety Movement Foundation to Eliminate Medical Errors in Hospitals

Park Ridge, Ill. – The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) is partnering with the Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) to eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals, a leading cause of death and injury to people across the globe. Preventable harm is ranked as the third leading cause of patient death in the United States and the 14th worldwide, according to the National Academy of Medicine.

As a PSMF partner, the AANA will work in alignment with the foundation to eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals by:

  1. Promoting the PSMF’s mission and vision to AANA members;
  2. Engaging in PSMF Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) workgroups through Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) subject matter experts;
  3. Informing AANA members and other stakeholders about the value of PSMF’s APSS;
  4. Encouraging hospital-based CRNAs to implement APSS or to share their own successful processes for eliminating preventable deaths with PSMF; and
  5. Sharing information about upcoming events, educational opportunities and speaking engagements between organizations.

“We believe the best way to improve patient safety is through mutual learning and a collaborative effort,” said Randall Moore, DNP, MBA, CRNA, AANA CEO. “Therefore, the AANA looks forward to joining more than 80 professional societies and associations, healthcare-related organizations, and patient advocacy groups that have also partnered with PSMF to make healthcare safer.”

More than 4.8 million people worldwide lose their lives to preventable medical errors and 200,000 of these patients die every year in U.S. hospitals. “Partnering with the PSMF is one more step AANA has taken to bring awareness to a wider audience of stakeholders that CRNAs are leaders in patient safety,” said Moore.

The Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) is a global nonprofit organization that works with a wide network of stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payers such as insurance companies, to eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals. The PSMF’s annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit presents Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) to meet patient safety challenges and highlights hospitals’ commitments to implementation.  Medical technology companies pledge to share data as part of this effort. Through the PSMF network of committed hospitals, close to 100,000 lives were saved in 2018 alone.
