Alastair Sloan named 2021 recipient of the IADR Isaac Schour Memorial Award

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Alastair Sloan, The University of Melbourne, Australia, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Isaac Schour Memorial Award. Sloan was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Sloan is Head of School at the Melbourne Dental School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and is a Professor of tissue engineering and dental biology. Before joining The University of Melbourne, Australia, he was a professor of tissue engineering and bone biology at Cardiff University, Wales, where he was the director of the Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering & Repair (CITER) from 2015-17 and head of school from 2017-20. Sloan received his undergraduate education at the University of Wales, Cardiff, and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham, England, where he progressed from a post-doctoral scholar to a reader with a focus on bone biology and tissue engineering.

Sloan’s research focuses on the regeneration of mineralized tissues and the behavior and therapeutic use of dental pulp stem cells. He is interested in the cellular and molecular responses of these cells to biomatrices and compromised biological environments to understand their functional behavior during tissue injury. Complimentary to this work, his lab is also focused on bacterial invasion and attachment in mineralized tissue infections, and novel drug delivery mechanisms for antimicrobial agents. He has been awarded over $6.2 million USD in external research funding to date and published over 80 peer reviewed research publications.

Sloan was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist Young Investigator Award in 2011. He is a past-president of the IADR Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group and a past chair of the IADR Constitution Committee.

Funded through a generous endowment provided by Bernard G. Sarnat, a former graduate student of Isaac Schour, and Rhoda G. Sarnat through the Sarnat Family Foundation, the Isaac Schour Memorial Award consists of a monetary prize and plaque and recognizes outstanding scientific contributions in the anatomical sciences, including tissue engineering, tissue regeneration and stem cell research as it relates to the oral, dental, or craniofacial complex. It is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
