AIP Proactively Moves to Remote Work Due to Coronavirus; Business to Continue as Usual

WASHINGTON, March 13, 2020 — In an abundance of caution, American Institute of Physics employees will be working remotely beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, to reduce potential exposure to the coronavirus.

AIP will transition to remote work until further notice. AIP staff will be available and working on their normal duties during this period, and the building where AIP is housed, the American Center for Physics, will remain open but unavailable to visitors.

At this time, no employees who work at AIP have tested positive for the coronavirus.

“AIP, as a scientific organization, is compelled to do our part for the community at large and contribute to flattening the transmission curve of the coronavirus. We have made the decision to transition AIP staff to working from home to reduce community exposure and social density, and protect our co-workers, loved ones, and friends,” Michael Moloney, AIP’s CEO, said. “The safety of our employees, their families, our volunteers, and the wider community is first and foremost in our thoughts with this decision. Our technology infrastructure is robust and will allow our dedicated team to conduct business effectively and pursue our mission without major interruption.”

The virus, identified as a coronavirus disease (COVID-19), was first identified in a pneumonia patient from a Chinese province in December 2019 and has spread to many other countries, including the United States, according to the World Health Organization. Coronaviruses, so named for their crownlike appearance, are a large family of viruses that spread from animals to humans, and the family includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
