A New Beat Offers Free Online Seminar Examining Disparities in Cardiovascular Care During Heart Month

WHAT:

The Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc. (ABC) and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) is offering a complimentary online seminar, “Tackling Disparities in CV Care: A Closer Look at Hypertension and Heart Failure” on Friday February 26, 2021. The program is part of a joint initiative called A New Beat which advocates for women and minorities rising as leaders in cardiology. It aims to foster careers of female and minority cardiologists, who can be poised to improve access to quality care for underserved populations.

The seminar will explore:

  • Inequities that lead to poor health outcomes
  • Innovative solutions for expanding access to hypertension and heart failure treatments
  • Improving outcomes in underserved populations

WHO:

Moderated by Dr. Nisha Jhalani, the program will feature presentations from Drs. D. Edmund Anstey and Sabra C. Lewsey.

Edmund Anstey, MD, MPH is a clinical cardiologist, cardiac intensivist, echocardiographer and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. His clinical areas of expertise include critical care cardiology, echocardiography, and hypertension. He is an NIH funded clinical investigator with a research interest in the cardiovascular manifestations of hypertension, ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring, and socioeconomic determinants of health.

Sabra C. Lewsey, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and an advanced heart failure cardiologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Her research interests include factors contributing to exercise intolerance, sarcopenia, frailty, and debilitation in aging, particularly in those with heart failure and in patients with HIV. She is also interested in quality initiatives in improving heart failure care, including access, utilization, and outcomes in diverse and aging populations.

Nisha Jhalani, MD is Director of Inpatient Clinical Services at the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Her clinical interests include preventative cardiology, personalized cardiovascular risk assessment and women’s health.

WHEN:

Friday, February 26, 2021

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM ET

WHERE:

Online at https://www.anewbeat.org/

WHY:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 80% of heart disease is preventable.

Hypertension disproportionately affects minorities. Black and Hispanic patients have a higher incidence of hypertension, less access to routine health care and medication, and poorer outcomes—such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. During February, American Heart Month, ABC and CRF tap their collaborative program, A New Beat, to offer this educational seminar and promote preventive measures for patients.
